IKO vs GAF: which shingle for a GTA roof?

The short answer: both are excellent Class A architectural shingles, and on a GTA roof the install quality, ventilation and underlayment matter more than the brand. The real differences are price and wind warranty — and we install both, so we’ve no reason to push one.

Pick IKO if price matters most

It’s made in Ontario, so the same-tier shingle is typically 10–20% cheaper installed — same Class A fire rating and a limited-lifetime warranty.

Pick GAF if wind warranty matters most

Timberline HDZ with WindProven carries the strongest wind warranty (up to 130 mph, 4-nail). GAF’s Golden Pledge is the deepest enhanced warranty — but it needs a certified installer.

Either way, the install is what lasts

A correctly ventilated, properly flashed roof in either brand outlives a poorly installed “premium” one. That’s where your money should go.

How we’d choose for your roof

We install IKO and GAF, and we lead with IKO Dynasty for most GTA homes: it’s Ontario-made, carries a strong wind rating, and the savings go further into the parts that actually fail first — ventilation, ice-&-water coverage and flashing. When a roof is unusually wind-exposed, or you want GAF’s enhanced warranty, we’ll spec GAF Timberline HDZ instead and show you the price difference line by line.

The point of Roofprint is that you don’t have to take our word for it: see the systems, the products and the real numbers, then watch us read your actual roof for a price.

IKO vs GAF — common questions

Is IKO or GAF better for a Toronto / GTA roof?

For most GTA homes both perform comparably when installed to manufacturer spec with proper ventilation and ice-&-water shield. IKO is made in Ontario so it costs less and has lower freight; GAF’s Timberline HDZ with WindProven carries the strongest wind warranty. The bigger driver of how long a GTA roof lasts is the install quality, ventilation and underlayment — not the shingle brand.

Is IKO cheaper than GAF?

Usually, yes — IKO is manufactured in Ontario, so the same-tier IKO shingle typically lands 10–20% cheaper installed in the GTA than the equivalent GAF line, before any difference in workmanship.

Which lasts longer, IKO Dynasty or GAF Timberline HDZ?

In real GTA conditions both are rated for a similar service life (commonly 25–30 years with correct ventilation). Both are dimensional architectural shingles with a limited-lifetime manufacturer warranty. Field longevity comes down to attic ventilation, flashing and tear-off quality far more than the specific brand.

Do I need the Class 4 impact-rated shingle in the GTA?

Only if you want maximum hail/impact resistance (IKO Nordic or GAF’s ArmorShield line). The GTA gets occasional hail, and some insurers offer a small premium credit for Class 4. For most homes it’s an optional upgrade, not a requirement.

Does the shingle brand affect my warranty?

Both carry a limited-lifetime material warranty. The bigger lever is the workmanship warranty from your installer and whether the manufacturer’s enhanced warranty (e.g. GAF Golden Pledge) requires a certified contractor. Roofprint backs every roof with a written workmanship warranty regardless of brand.
